With the quality of receivers you’re able to get in the first two rounds of most Fantasy leagues, it makes it easy to start your team with a WR-WR approach. But what happens over the next three or four rounds can really define your roster.
At No. 6 overall in our pick-by-pick series for a standard league, my first two picks were Julio Jones and Alshon Jeffery . It would be a surprise if Jones is available at this spot in most formats (his Average Draft Position is No. 4 overall), but you should always be prepared for anything to happen.
My usual draft strategy at this point in Round 3 is to look for the best available running back, but I’ll never pass on another standout receiver if one slips. This is also the range I’ll look for Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton , but I’m not inclined to reach for Jordan Reed or Greg Olsen just yet.
Let’s see how my roster turned out …
- 1.6 Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons
- 2.19 Alshon Jeffery, WR, Chicago Bears
- 3.30 LeSean McCoy , RB, Buffalo Bills
- 4.43 John Brown , WR, Arizona Cardinals
- 5.54 Ryan Mathews , RB, Philadelphia Eagles
- 6.67 Ameer Abdullah , RB, Detroit Lions
- 7.78 Carson Palmer , QB, Cardinals
- 8.91 Travis Kelce , TE, Kansas City Chiefs
- 9.102 Bilal Powell , RB, New York Jets
- 10.115 Theo Riddick , RB, Lions
- 11.126 Mike Gillislee , RB, Bills
- 12.139 Devin Funchess , WR, Carolina Panthers
- 13.150 Los Angeles Rams DST
- 14.163 Dan Bailey , K, Dallas Cowboys
I love the way this team came together with McCoy falling to Round 3, but it would have been a tough call if Demaryius Thomas was still on the board. He was drafted one spot earlier at No. 29 overall, and you can see my approach was to be running back heavy after starting with Jones and Jeffery.
When you start your draft with WR-WR, you want to have a surplus of running backs with upside, and I feel like I accomplished that with McCoy, Mathews, Abdullah, Powell, Riddick and Gillislee, who appears to be the handcuff for McCoy.
Brown is an excellent flex option and a standout No. 3 receiver, and I only drafted one more receiver, which was someone with upside in Funchess, who could push Kelvin Benjamin for the No. 1 job in Carolina. I like the talent I have in this league at running back and receiver.
But the best part of this draft was waiting on quarterback and tight end and ending up with Palmer in Round 7 and Kelce in Round 8. You can argue that both players are in the top 5 of their positions, and I got both at tremendous value.
