In the past Serena Williams has said that she doesn’t want the word “female” thrown around when talking about her greatness.
She thinks she’s one of the greatest athletes of all time — regardless of gender.
It appears Nike is in agreement.
The shoe and clothing company put up an advertisement in Brooklyn that declares Williams as the greatest athlete of all time. Period.
Wall Street Journal writer Jason Gay tweeted out an image of the powerful banner.
While the billboard goes up in Brooklyn, Williams is over in Queens, where she’ll play her opening match in the U.S. Open on Tuesday night.
A tournament win would give her 23 career major titles, which is an Open era record for a female singles player.
After winning Wimbledon in July, Williams was quickly ousted from the Rio Olympics singles and doubles tournaments.
She’ll look to bounce back at the U.S. Open, with first-round opponent Ekaterina Makarova as the first obstacle. Perhaps she’ll have some added confidence thanks to Nike’s flattering ad.
