The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were originally set to play their preseason finale against the Washington Redskins on Thursday evening. The game will now be played on Wednesday due to the threat of a tropical depression, the team announced.
No tropical storm warning had been issued for Tampa as of Monday evening, but as USA Today noted, Tropical Depression 9 is expected to gain strength and become a named storm as early as Tuesday, with landfall expected late Wednesday evening or early Thursday.
Here’s the radar map from Weather.com for Thursday evening.
“Over the past day as it has become apparent that the most severe weather associated with Tropical Depression 9 will likely make landfall on Thursday,” Bucs COO Brian Ford said in a statement. “This decision was made by both teams in conjunction with the National Football League and local authorities in an effort to ensure the safety of our fans, players and stadium staff.”
Kickoff that had originally been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, but it will now be at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
