The Ryder Cup is this month. The Ryder Cup is this month!

United States captain Davis Love III has been working on strategy and picks for a long time, and he has a famous golfer with 14 majors and 79 PGA Tour wins by his side helping.

Tiger Woods will apparently serve as chief strategist to Love this September at Hazeltine. Love is excited about that, but he’s also fascinated to see Woods serve as vice captain in lieu of actually playing in the event (just like we all are).

“I sit back sometimes, I even talk to him about it, I can’t imagine what it is going to be like to have Tiger Woods on a golf cart watching a group of guys play golf,” said Love. “Half the fans are going to be watching Tiger watch golf, they’re not going to be watching the golf. And if Tiger goes to check pin positions, how much of the gallery is he going to take with him?

“So I think it’s going to be really, it’s going to be cool. Obviously, the Ryder Cup is so big that when I was assistant captain for Corey [Pavin] I just faded into the background, I was just another guy in a cart working. I don’t think Tiger can do that. I don’t think he’s going to fade into the background even at that big an event.

“But it’s going to be fun for our team to have him around. Think about the last year, guys trying to make this team know Tiger Woods is going no matter what. So I think that’s a big statement. Obviously Jim [Furyk], Steve [Stricker], Tom [Lehman] putting in a lot, guys are used to that. But they’re not used to, we haven’t seen Tiger. He’s been a ghost for a year on the golf course. He’s going to show up at the Ryder Cup with our team uniforms on and I think that says a lot for our team.”

I agree with this. It might be a distraction. Maybe. Because Woods is always the biggest show in town. But it will also be a heck of a lot of fun. And as they discussed in the video, I want somebody filming the first time Phil Mickelson asks Big Cat to fetch him a bottle of water. You know that’s something he’s been wanting to do his entire career.
