The scariest moment of the 2016 season took place Sunday afternoon at Safeco Field

Angels righty Matt Shoemaker was struck in the head by a 105 mph line drive off the bat of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager. Here’s the video if you haven’t seen it:

Shoemaker was bloodied but he never did lose consciousness, and he was able to walk off the field under his own power. He was awake and speaking at the hospital.

Initial tests showed Shoemaker suffered a small skull fracture and a hematoma, and he would later see a neurologist for further examination. Overnight though, Shoemaker had to undergo emergency surgery due to continued bleeding.

Emergency surgery is always scary, but the good news is it went well and Shoemaker is expected to return home from Seattle later this week.

By all accounts Shoemaker is expected to make a full recovery, thankfully. That’s most important. Baseball is secondary.
