No matter what happens standings-wise, the Tigers seemingly enjoyed one type of big win in their game against the White Sox. That’s because designated hitter Victor Martinez may have avoided a serious injury.
Martinez walked off the field gingerly after appearing to injure himself trying to stretch a single into a double:
Martinez, who brought a .292/.348/.474 line and 23 home runs into the game, was thrown out by Melky Cabrera trying to advance. He grabbed at his knee and was slow to get up, yet took his next at-bat anyway, signaling he’s OK.

Should Martinez miss time — and right now, again, he appears to be OK — then the Tigers would presumably turn to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Steven Moya, and JaCoby Jones at DH. Given that Nick Castellanos — another key cog in the Detroit lineup — remains on the mend himself, all the Tigers can do is hope that Martinez stays in the lineup. Their playoff hopes may hinge on it.
