Georgia’s star true freshman quarterback Jacob Eason will reportedly get his first career start in the Bulldogs’ home opener against Nicholls State, according to The Athens Banner-Herald and DawgNation.
Redshirt senior Greyson Lambert started the opener for Georgia against North Carolina in the Georgia Dome, but both Lambert and Eason split time in the game. Eason completed 8-of-12 passes for 131 yards and 1 touchdown against the Tar Heels in the Bulldogs’ 33-24 win, while Lambert went 5 for 8 with 54 yards passing.
Just because Eason starts doesn’t necessarily mean the quarterback competition is closed. Smart would not announce a starter on his radio show on Thursday night and noted that both quarterbacks had good moments in the opener.
“I don’t want people to think we have to settle on one guy,” Smart said on his radio show, per DawgNation. “I was quoted (Wednesday) as saying that we’ve got to make a decision. That was for this game, not that we have to make a decision permanently, by any means. We’re going to continue to have competition each week regardless of who trots out there first on Saturday. There will continue to be competition.”
This could be the beginning of the Eason-era, something Georgia fans have been excited about since the five-star recruit committed to the Dawgs, but it’s not a lock that Smart is ready to leave Lambert on the bench and go forward with the freshman.
Starting a freshman in the SEC doesn’t usually go smoothly, as Jon Solomon explained before the season, but Eason’s performance against North Carolina was good enough to earn him more time to try and win the job full time. Nicholls State at home seems to be as good a time as any to let Eason loose and see how his command of the offense is from the start.
