Football is back. Say it out loud and soak it in. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2016 season on Thursday night in grand fashion — read Ryan Wilson’s excellent preview for here — and there will be, as columnist Bill Reiter pointed out, plenty of eyes on the Carolina quarterback.

Cam Newton knows it — the latest Gatorade ad focusing on his offseason and the upcoming year are complete proof. Released on Thursday, it focuses on Newton wrapping up the Super Bowl in ugly fashion, relieving the criticism and then shrugging it off.

“This Little Light of Mine” is playing in the background in a delightful gospel fashion and Newton’s moving forward, into the light.

So what are the messages here?

1) That Super Bowl press conference doesn’t define Cam. It’s easy to get stuck on it, but it was one bad moment in an otherwise incredible season.

2) The Panthers and Cam are moving forward. Ron Rivera preaches turning the page every year. His quarterback is embracing it too.

3) Carolina is very much still a Super Bowl contender.

4) Football is back. Again: soak it in.
