The California Kid isn’t a kid anymore. Urijah Faber has had a tough go of things with his latest showing ending in a unanimous decision loss to Jimmie Rivera at UFC 203.
Faber didn’t look good at all in the bout. He tried to pressure Rivera and force him into a mistake, but Rivera sat patiently and waited for timing to open up for counter punches. He also did incredible damage to Faber’s leg, nearly kicking it in half in the second round.
Rivera even said after the fight that he couldn’t believe he beat Faber.
“I grew up watching this guy fight,” Rivera said.
That should tell you enough about the California Kid.
Faber, now 37, appeared to suffer a broken hand early and couldn’t land anything significant with it. He suffered a similar injury when he lost to Dominick Cruz in June at UFC 199. Faber is now 1-3 in his last four fights and for the most part has looked non-competitive in each loss.
He has not scored a knockout since 2006. He did get two submission wins in 2014, but the explosiveness is no there right now.
If he takes some time off, he might find something. But right now, Faber is better served as a mentor and trainer for his young stable of fighters.
