Tiger Woods will make his long-awaited return to the PGA Tour at the Safeway Open in a month. Probably. Woods has not played since August 2015, and it feels like it has been much longer than that.

Plenty of golfers have chimed on about their excitement that Woods is returning, and two-time major winner Martin Kaymer is among those who think Woods can win at the highest level once again.

“At the end of the day it all comes down to Tiger’s health,” Kaymer told Reuters. “If he can practice the way he wants to practice, as hard as he wants, then I think he can win any golf tournament in the world. He’s proved it before so I don’t see why he can’t do it again. The competition now is obviously a lot harder but I think it would be very disrespectful to take him out of consideration for winning any tournament in the world.”

Did you see the key word in there? It’s practice. First, is Tiger physically able to do it? Second, does he even want to? Woods has nothing to prove to anyone. No matter how you look at it, he’s one of the two greatest golfers of all time. The drive within himself and for the goals he has attained has been outrageous for 20 years. How long can that flame burn?

I don’t blame Tiger at all if he wants to move on to other endeavors. I’m with Kaymer here, though. If Woods is physically fit and emotionally and mentally driven, there is no reason he can’t win any tournament (including majors). I just don’t believe this is a realistic expectation for someone who just had three back surgeries in less than two years.

“We all know he can win tournaments the way he plays,” said Kaymer. “I think it is more about the mental challenge for him over the next few months, not trying to want things too much, to be patient and calm about things.”

Woods’ top 20 finish at the 2015 Masters after not playing for several months is a testament to the storehouse of knowledge and guile he has locked away. I’d love to see a scenario play out over the next 8-10 years where he gets to unleash every last bit of that as the final few holes of his career unfurl.
