Last week I started with a FanDuel chalk lineup. This week I want to start with the most point-chaser picks for Week 2.
To be clear, these guys were stars in Week 1 who don’t interest me in Week 2. The reasons for this varies, but it mostly revolved around game script, ownership and touchdown regression.
Alex Smith (FD $7,000, DK $6,300)
Melvin Gordon (FD $6,600, DK $4,800)
Will Fuller (FD $6,200, DK $4,200)
Jack Doyle (FD $5,200, DK $2,500)
I’m going to try to give Thursdays a little more tournament feel, so let’s also talk about stacks.
The New York Giants are my top stack of the week in a matchup with the New Orleans Saints . This isn’t contrarian play at all. Everyone is going to play Eli Manning and Odell Beckham , Jr. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sterling Shepard and Victor Cruz also had substantial ownership. They deserve it. The one guy who might be slightly underowned is Rashad Jennings . I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s a top-10 back this week.
My second favorite stack is the Oakland Raiders , and Derek Carr might actually be a little bit sneaky. Carr didn’t have a great week Week 1 because of touchdown randomness, but that will probably correct itself in Week 2 against a bad Atlanta Falcons defense. Latavius Murray and Amari Cooper are both top-10 options, but Michael Crabtree will probably be the lowest owned skill position player you want to play.
Neither of these stacks are contrarian at all, but we can handle that at RB, TE or our third WR. Here are four options:
Rashad Jennings (FD $6,300, DK $5,600)
No running back against the Saints can be completely contrarian, but Jennings shouldn’t be one of the most owned running backs by any stretch. Also, people are pretty hesitant to play a RB with their QB/WR combo. That makes perfect sense in most instances. The better the QB does, generally the lower the chances for a good game from the RB. Especially one who doesn’t catch passes. When the defense is the Saints, the equation changes a little bit. Jennings could go for 100 total yards and a score and be an outstanding play with the Giants passing game still blowing up.
Giovani Bernard (FD $5,500, DK $4,200)
Bernard gets the double whammy in terms of ownership. He was awful last year and he’s recently had a bad run of games against the Pittsburgh Steelers . Plus, his touches were down in Week 1. I don’t care. He still has huge upside at this price if he gets into the end zone. The Steelers are going to do everything they can to stop A.J. Green , and if they have even a little success Bernard should see an increase in targets.
Dennis Pitta (FD $4,800, DK $2,800)
He’s back! The last time Dennis Pitta was healthy and played 16 games he finished as the No. 7 TE overall. Yes, that was four years ago, but his snap count and usage suggest to me that the Baltimore Ravens think Pitta is fully healthy. For as long as he stays that way, he’s a decent streaming option in season long. Against a defense as bad as the Cleveland Browns at this price with low ownership, he’s an elite tournament play.
Michael Thomas (FD $5,000, DK $4,000)
Everyone is going to be on Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead this week. As they should be. But Michael Thomas only had 58 yards and didn’t score a touchdown, so he’ll probably be overlooked. For that reason both he and Coby Fleener are great tournament plays who are cheap enough to help you stack whatever stud stack you choose. As long as Thomas keeps catching six passes a game, he’ll break a long one and score a touchdown sooner rather than later.
