Thursday night, with their postseason chances hanging by a thread, the Pirates walloped the Phillies to keep their season alive (PIT 15, PHI 2). Pittsburgh is 5 1/2 games back of the second wild card spot with three teams ahead of them and 17 games to play. They’re alive, but barely.
Former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen led the way offensively Thursday by going 3 for 5 with two home runs. As it turns out, he was motivated by a former teammate. A.J. Burnett visited the team before the game and told McCutchen to, “Get me two,” writes Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Here’s the video of McCutchen’s two home runs and his exchange with Burnett:
Hey, if it’s that easy to go out and hit two home runs, maybe Burnett should visit the Pirates more often next season. The Pirate will need all the help they can get in the NL Central.
Overall, it’s been a very tough year for the Buccos and McCutchen in particular. He’s hitting .250/.331/.426 with 23 homers, which are very un-McCutchen-like numbers. I get the feeling that as soon as the season ends, we’re going to find out he’s been playing hurt all year.
