Thursday night the Cubs became the first team this season to clinch a postseason spot. They did that despite losing to the Brewers (MIL 5, CHC 4) at home in Wrigley Field because the Cardinals lost to the Giants (SF 6, STL 2). The St. Louis loss gave Chicago the 2016 NL Central title.
Because the Cardinals were out on the West Coast and lost late at night Thursday, the Cubs couldn’t properly celebrate their division title. They had to show up to the park for an afternoon game Friday, a game they won on Miguel Montero‘s walk-off home run (CHC 5, MIL 4). To the action footage:
The Cubs didn’t take it easy after clinching. They went right back to work and came from behind for Friday’s win. They scored two in the ninth to force extra innings, then bam, they walked it off in the 10th. They’re now 94-53 on the season. No other team has more than 87 wins.
Following the walk-off home run, the Cubbies did what they couldn’t do Thursday night: celebrate their division title. They took to the field and celebrated with their “W” flag. Check it out:
That’s pretty awesome. This is Chicago’s first division title since 2008, and after sneaking up on people and winning 97 games a year ago, they came into this season as the heavy NL Central favorite. They’ve done nothing to disappoint.
Aside from clinching the best record in baseball and thus homefield advantage in the NLCS, the Cubs will focus on getting healthy and lining up their rotation for the playoffs these final two weeks of the season. A little downtime is good this time of year.
