The healing process for Nebraska’s football program continues after the loss of punter Sam Foltz, killed in a car accident this offseason along with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler in July. In the season opener, the Cornhuskers honored their late teammate by taking a delay of game with only 10 players on the field for the first punt of the game.

On Saturday, an Oregon player offered a gesture from the visiting Ducks by placing flowers at the 27-yard-line — 27 for Foltz’s uniform number.

Foltz was also honored in Wisconsin’s thrilling 16-14 win over LSU as Rafael Gaglianone hit a go-ahead 47-yard field goal with 3:47 left in the game to give the Badgers a two-point lead while wearing Foltz’s No. 27. Gaglianone normally wears No. 10 but opted to change numbers to honor his fallen friend.

The 22-year-old Foltz was the Big Ten punter of the year in 2015 as a junior and was on the Ray Guy Award watch list coming into his senior season. Foltz averaged 44.23 yards per punt in 2015.
