North Dakota State was the big FCS winner on Saturday, knocking off Iowa on the road for the program’s sixth-straight win against FBS competition and first victory over an AP Top 25 team. The Bison’s thrilling upset was far from the only headline coming out of a wild Saturday and far from the only must-see moment coming from the FCS ranks.
Eastern Washington and Northern Iowa played a top-15 FCS showdown that was on-par with the top-15 battles we saw at the FBS level in Week 3. What made this game arguably even more exciting was EWU’s gutsy call to fake a field goal down two with less than a minute remaining.
UNI led 30-28 with 49 seconds to play when Eastern Washington quarterback Reilly Hennessey, on the field as the holder, pulled the ball up from the ground and rolled right. The fake field goal totally caught the Panthers off guard and Hennessey connected with Beau Byus for what would be the game-winning touchdown.
Northern Iowa had a chance to answer in the final moments of the game but turned the ball over. The decision to call a fake when a go-ahead field goal would suffice introduces risk to the equation, but it should be noted that the wind, particularly impactful on Saturday, probably played a role as well. Still, excellent execution by Hennessey, who threw three touchdowns on the night for EWU.
