On Monday, Giancarlo Stanton made his second start since rejoining the Marlins on Sept. 6. As it just so happens, he also recorded his second hit.

What’s noteworthy about that? It doubled as Stanton’s first home run since returning, and tripled as one of the more impressive home runs you’ll see this month:

Stanton knew it was gone. You knew it was gone. Even the pitcher, A.J. Cole, knew it was gone. You just can’t leave fastballs in that spot against hitters like Stanton and expect to get away with it. Here’s an idea of the exact damage, courtesy of Statcast:

For those curious, that ranks as Stanton’s fifth-longest home run of the season.

The Marlins have become an afterthought in the National League playoff picture. They entered the night five games back in the wild-card race, but on the bright side, at least Stanton could make the final two weeks exciting for other reasons.
