Jon Rahm is not a neophyte when it comes to the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Rahm nearly won the tournament as an amateur back in 2005 when he finished T5. Coming off his win last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, Rahm stoked his (sort of) hometown fans on the raucous par-3 16th hole on Thursday.
Rahm, who is from Spain, went to nearby Arizona State. So when he stepped to the tee in Round 1, he tossed on a No. 42 ASU jersey with the name “Rahmbo” on the back. No. 42 is of course the number Pat Tillman wore when he played football for the Sun Devils. The patrons responded like Rahm hoped they would. His shot, however, did not go all that well. Rahm two-putted from 45 feet for par.
He followed up his first win last week with a 1-under 70 in the first round on Thursday.
